DRAFT AISD Alternative Proposal
This is a DRAFT – not “approved” for distribution by AISD but read into the record at the meeting. It was spear headed by FTF members Susan Moffat and Kathy Tovo with vocal support from Chad Williams and others, presented at the end of the task force meeting on January 18, 2011.
It is a significant attempt to listen to the community input received last week and move in a new direction, at least to start.
The intent as we understand it is to at focus the cuts from this FTF away from school closures and instead develop cuts that affect adults not elementary school kids.
The community has expressed the strong position that the Facility Task Force should explore additional facility savings, resorting to school closures only after other options are exhausted. Their perspective is a valid one: school closures would have significant deleterious effects on students, families, neighborhoods, and Austin as a whole. Such a step should not, in our opinion, be taken without collaborating with the community on a thorough consideration of other options. In hindsight, we are surprised that the 2009 MGT Efficiency Study failed to address administrative space. We believe it is possible to meet or exceed MGT’s projected savings of $7.1 million through greater efficiencies in other facility areas, including administrative space, before displacing students.
