State Representative Dawnna Dukes
On January 20, 2011, State Representative Dawnna Dukes sent a letter to Dr. Meria Carstarphan, AISD superintendent. In it she states:
The closure of these schools for the purpose of addressing budget deficits would represent another tremendous setback to the East Austin and broader Austin Communities. The closures have the potential to lead to the decline of historic Austin neighborhoods, where a majority of inhabitants are either low-income, minority, or both.
