On January 13, 2011, District 49 State Representative Elliott Naishtat sent a letter to Austin Superintendant Dr. Meria Carstarphen, ccing the AISD Board of Trustees and the co-chairs of the Facilities Task Force. Those who attended the Community Meeting at the Berger Center Thursday night had the pleasure of hearing Chair Naishtat read the letter to the task force in person.

“Why did the Facilities Taskforce apparently choose to ignore academic achievement, parental involvement, staff quality, and impact on neighborhoods and businesses in crafting its recommended options?

I am extremely concerned about the impact of this decision on Austin’s economic recovery. Schools are a vital part of corporate location and start-up entrepreneurial decisions, as well as a vital source of customers to the many businesses along the Barton Springs Road and South Lamar corridors. I ask that businesses be included in the public outreach efforts and that an economic impact analysis of any proposals be undertaken immediately.

Schools are more than buildings. Schools are the hearts of neighborhoods.”

Thank you so much Chair Naishtat. We appreciate your support!

Send Chair Naishtat your thanks.
